Steven Shapiro To Be Honored With JCC’s Humanitarian Award

For 37 years, the Woodcrest Country Club’s Pro-Am tournament has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to provide youngsters with scholarships for the Jewish Community Center’s (JCC) summer camps.
During those years, Steve Shapiro of Cherry Hill has been contributing his time, energy and guidance to support not only the JCC, but also a host of local charitable and civic organizations, particularly those that benefit children.
On July 27, the championship event and the champion of community service will share the stage as Shapiro is honored as recipient of the JCC’s Daniel B. Toll Humanitarian Award. Since 1984, the prestigious honor has been presented to outstanding individuals who have led by example through their humanitarian, philanthropic and volunteer activities.
As he anticipates his special evening, Shapiro looks forward to being in the company of golfing greats such as Sean O’Hair, who recently captured the PGA Tour crown for the third time and who will be conducting a special golf clinic for participants.
Shapiro’s own “above par” accomplishments have benefited the Alzheimer’s Association, American Heart Association and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He also is an ardent supporter of the Jewish Federation, Beth El Synagogue, M’Kor Shalom and the Masonic Order.
As partner of the Cherry Hill accounting firm, Alloy Silverstein, Shapiro, Adams, Mulford, Cicalese, Wilson & Co., Shapiro has engaged the company’s commitment to his many charitable and civic ties.
However, it is his work on behalf of children’s activities that means most to Shapiro and his wife of 45 years, Renee (nee Skoboloff). The Shapiros are “all about kids” as evidenced by the Aquarium Wall that they helped establish in the children’s section of the Cherry Hill Library. On the homefront, the devoted couple takes special pleasure in celebrating family life with daughters Stacy and Marci, son-in-law Michael Rosenstein and four grandchildren.
In addition to his steadfast support of JCC camps, Shapiro serves on the Board of SLM Corporation (Sallie Mae) in Washington, DC, where he ceaselessly champions scholarship opportunities and loans for students who can’t afford college. His academic involvement includes recurring lectures at Rutgers University where he is a popular guest professor.
Currently an active board member of Met Life Bank, Shapiro held similar positions with Howard Federal Savings Bank, Jefferson Bank of NJ, First People’s Bank of NJ, Carnegie Bank and The Bank. Of special note is that Shapiro’s first bank directorship was with Fidelity Bank of NJ that was founded by Danny Toll, for whom the JCC award is named.
Shapiro previously served as a commissioner of the NJ Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, and as a member of the Cherry Hill Chamber of Commerce and Cherry Hill Finance Advisory Board. He is a current member of the Virtua Hospital Foundation Board and the Rutgers University Executive Advisory Council.
“The extraordinary commitment and compassion for his family, community and charities, as well as the tireless channeling of his energy to enable children to flourish, make Steve Shapiro a commendable recipient of this humanitarian award,” said Lois Asbell, Honorary Chair of the event.
