‘Million Dollar First Impressions,’ ‘High Heel’ Networking Tips, and Customer Service Leadership Top Agenda

06/27/10

Learning how to make a “million dollar first impression,” can get you started on “claiming the life you were meant to live.”
That was the message that personal communication consultant Sara Canuso had for a roomful of the region’s leading business women at the 5th annual Women’s Business Forum presented by Burlington County College and the Burlington County Chamber of Commerce early this month.
“Up to 93% of communication can be non-verbal,” according to Canuso. “So mastering your impression on others is vital to attracting and retaining clients and succeeding in the office.
“Empower your image through clothing, colors and styles as marketing tools to obtain maximum results,” she urged the 70 women (and one man) who jammed into her workshop.
“Eliminate negative thoughts and actions that prevent you from reaching your potential…and read and use body language as a means of negotiation,” Canuso counseled.
And “if you don’t ask, the answer is always ‘no’,” she reminded her audience.
Canuso was joined at the half day event by TD Bank’s Linda Verba you challenged her audience by declaring that “customer service can make or break your company.”
Over the last 10 years, Verba has led the strategic growth of the bank’s retail operations from 75 to more than 480 locations.
“Becoming more effective at building relationships while generating business with better habits…and knowing what to avoid,” was the subject of a panel devoted to “Networking…in High Heels.”
Chamber President Kristi-Howell-Ikeda was joined for this session by Marilyn Kleinberg, the Executive Managing Director of eWomen Network in South Jersey, Linda Lane, founding mother of The old Girls’ Network and Sandy Spadaro, the president of the South Jersey chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners.

  •   January is not a big month for “don’t miss” events, But it is home to one of, if not “the,” premier events of the year—the State Chamber’s annual “Walk to Washington.”
The tradition began in 1937 when several of the state's top business executives took a train to Washington to have dinner with New Jersey's congressional delegation. The rest is history. The Walk to Washington obtained its name when participants realized that few sit on the train; they literally walk the train mingling and exchanging business cards the whole way to Washington.
