The Honorable John B. Mariano (ret.), chairman of the Camden County Bar Foundation’s JudgeJohn F. Gerry Award Committee, is pleased to announce that Justice John E. Wallace, Jr. (ret.)has been named recipient of the 2010 John F. Gerry Award.
The award will be presented at the 15th annual Gerry Award dinner on Tuesday, October 19, atthe Westin Hotel in Mount Laurel. Beginning with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., the award willbe presented during the dinner, which begins at 7 p.m.
The Judge Gerry Award is presented annually by the Camden County Bar Foundation to recog-nize the continuing outstanding contributions of a member of the Bar of the State of New Jersey,or a member of the State or Federal Judiciary, who exemplifies the spirit and humanitarianism forwhich Judge Gerry is remembered.
The Judge John F. Gerry Memorial Scholarship Award, established in 2002, will also be pre-sented at the dinner. The award is available to students enrolled at any New Jersey law school. Scholarship recipients must have demonstrated academic achievement and genuine financialneed, coupled with a verifiable history of and/or a desire to practice in the public service sector. Justice Wallace, nominated to the New Jersey Supreme Court by Governor James E.McGreevey in 2003, was sworn in as an Associate Justice by Chief Justice Deborah T. Poritzat a private ceremony on May 20, 2003. On June 4, 2003, he reaffirmed the oath of office in apublic ceremony at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey.
At the time of his nomination, Justice Wallace was a New Jersey Superior Court Judge, sitting inthe Appellate Division. Appointed to the Superior Court in 1984, Justice Wallace was promotedto the Appellate Division in 1992. As a trial judge, Justice Wallace sat in Criminal and CivilDivisions, as well as the Family Part, in the Gloucester County vicinage.
Prior to his appointment to the New Jersey Superior Court, Justice Wallace was a partner in thelaw firm of Atkinson, Myers, Archie & Wallace. During that time he also served as the MunicipalJudge for Washington Township in Gloucester County, was an Associate at the Philadelphia lawfirm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhodes, and an attorney for the Trustees of thePenn Central Transportation Co.
Born in Pitman, Justice Wallace received his B.A. from the University of Delaware in 1964 and his J.D. from Harvard LawSchool in 1967. He also served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970, attaining the rank of Captain.
The recipient of numerous honors from respected civic and legal organizations, including the Association of Black WomenLawyers of New Jersey; the Orient of New Jersey Dedicated Service Award from the Valley of Camden; the WashingtonTownship Board of Education Appreciation Award; and the Van J. Clinton award from the Garden State Bar Association.
