The Wine Room Hosts Mass Grape Stomp To Help Stomp Out Alzheimer’s Disease

09/08/09

The Wine Room of Cherry Hill, South Jersey’s only make-your-own wine facility, is inviting customers and the public to help stomp out Alzheimer’s disease with the 2nd Annual Mass Grape Stomp Sept. 10 at its location off Springdale Road.
From noon until 2 p.m., wine lovers and everyone else will be encouraged to shed their shoes and step into a giant, custom-built grape-stomping pit, where they’ll do their best Lucy impression as they celebrate the arrival of the California grapes and the fall winemaking season.  The Wine Room will donate $10 per stomper to the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter.  Food will be served, along with wine samples for those who need to muster up the daring to get grapes between their toes.  No registration or reservations are required.
“This is such a fun way to highlight the great work that the Alzheimer’s Association does, while giving people an opportunity to find out more about how wine is made right here in South Jersey,” says The Wine Room’s owner, Kenton Nice.  “Wine lovers are a very social group to begin with, so this is another great chance to meet like-minded people while helping a good cause.”
For the record, the actual winemaking process does not include manually stomping the grapes nowadays, but the tradition has long roots, and it’s something customers of The Wine Room often ask to do just for the experience.  The grapes to be stomped are usually kept at room temperature for a day or two, otherwise they’d be brutally cold on the feet.
With the arrival of the California grape harvest in early September, winemaking kicks into high gear, and oenophiles will visit The Wine Room four times or more over the following 10 months to create their own varietals, which will ultimately bear their chosen name and label.  Each session involves about 30 minutes of effort, but winemakers spend a couple of hours enjoying food, other wine, and each other’s company.

  •   January is not a big month for “don’t miss” events, But it is home to one of, if not “the,” premier events of the year—the State Chamber’s annual “Walk to Washington.”
The tradition began in 1937 when several of the state's top business executives took a train to Washington to have dinner with New Jersey's congressional delegation. The rest is history. The Walk to Washington obtained its name when participants realized that few sit on the train; they literally walk the train mingling and exchanging business cards the whole way to Washington.
