A Snapshot of Where South Jersey’s Economy Stands…

02/24/10

This month we continue to look at some key metrics that create a snapshot of the regional economy.
We add a few barometers each month, so that we end up with a pretty comprehensive picture of what’s happening in the region by year’s end.
In January, we started with the basics, population, square miles, median household income and unemployment rate. This month, we’re removing media household income (it’s an annual number) and updating the unemployment numbers (every South Jersey county was up…the state was up…and the country was flat).
We’re also adding casino revenues and our own SNJBP Index of the stock prices of publicly traded companies that are important to the region.
Atlantic City’s casinos reported $294.2 million in casino win in January—a decrease of 8.5 percent over the same month a year ago. But it is less than the overall percentage dec line for 2009, which was 13.20 %. Note that “casino win” is the net amount of money won by casinos. It is not profit…it is only gross revenues from table games + slot machines.
As for our SNJBP Stock Watch, the composite for our 10 publicly traded stocks is up $2.43 for the year to date (through 2-11), a gain of a whopping .006%.
If you have suggestions on what we should be tracking, send us a note to jenny@snjbp.com.
As you look at the statistics, remember that they will represent the most recent data available (to us), so if you have something that is more up-to-date or more accurate, please let us know.
Here’s a look at where the region stands as we start the year. Stay tuned as we watch what happens during the months ahead.

  •    The mission of the Next Generation Aviation Research Park (ARTP) is to promote sustained economic growth and job creation throughout New Jersey and the nation by implementing and operating a cooperative, state-of-the-art aviation Research Park that will support the evolution of the Next Generation aviation environment.
At full build out, the Park will include seven multi-story buildings with a total of over 400,000 square feet of laboratory and research space located on the campus of the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center which is the nation’s leading air transportation Federal Facility.

  •   January is not a big month for “don’t miss” events, But it is home to one of, if not “the,” premier events of the year—the State Chamber’s annual “Walk to Washington.”
The tradition began in 1937 when several of the state's top business executives took a train to Washington to have dinner with New Jersey's congressional delegation. The rest is history. The Walk to Washington obtained its name when participants realized that few sit on the train; they literally walk the train mingling and exchanging business cards the whole way to Washington.
